Northern Michigan's "Dogman"

Legend in Michigan tells of this bizarre wolf-like creature that is said to appear in Northern Michigan on July 7th of the 7th year of each decade. It has been a frightening part of local folklore for years.

I know a man whose life was forever changed by his encounter with this mysterious creature. He was out for a walk in the woods near Frankfort, Michigan when he encountered a huge dog. He ran in terror when it reared up on its hind legs and he saw its "evil eyes and the hint of a grin."

Wooooooooooooo
Beware the Dogman!

If you want a copy of the Dogman Song, CDs can be purchased for 5 dollars each from WTCM Radio, P.O. Box 472, Traverse City, Michigan, 49684 - the price includes postage to the USA.

The profits are donated to local animal rescue groups.

Have you ever heard the song about the Dogman? I hear it on the radio ever now and then.

Thanks! I'm glad someone out there appreciates my inane ramblings. The Internet is a large and mysterious place and it is easy to get lost in the shuffle. Thanks again for the kind words.

Jeepers Creepers Dr. Fong, that's SCARY!!

I thought I told you my story about running into the Dogman in confidence!

Dr. Fong said...

Did you have a run in with Dogman as well, Osiris? I was talking about someone else who has had this truly rare encounter. I guess Dogman only appears every 7 years or so. I was speaking of an older man from Frankfort who swears up and down it was a real and terrifying encounter.

Osiris said...

I don't really talk about it unless I'm heavily medicated..... It was the single worst experience in my life.

Chris said...

I think this is one of those "human-animal hybrids" that Bush said congress should outlaw during his State of the Union address

Osiris said...

After all the ridicule I have endured, I'm done telling the story. Not to mention the fact that I have horrible Panic Attacks when I tell the complete story, even though I am now on anti-anxiety medication. I'm never going back to Michigan, and I hope to destroy all memory of my encounter.

Sorry, but I will not discuss this further.

Linda said...

Osiris, if you had an encounter please do write me about it. I'll be posting sightings that came too late to be included in the book coming out at the end of March, but I keep people's stories confidential on request. You can email me from the weirdmichigan.com site. It's important to keep track of these things to help develop an overall pattern. Thanks! Linda

I've grown up with this song and legend (i live in a small town near frankfort) and it's a part of my life as much as the Jersey Devil may be to someone from New Jersey. I have a copy of the song and still get chills whenever i listen to it. although i have yet to have a first hand experience i've talked with people who've told me their stories and tend to believe it. it's loads of fun to creep out some fudgies when they invade my town each july. especially next year (2007!). it's a great story to tell in the dark, real or not!

Dr. Fong, where exactly is the festival on July 7, 2007? My friends have had a sighting a few days ago in Kalkaska. They had just came off of Seely Road onto Valley Road. There's a strech between Seeley Road and Old 72 Road that is mostly feild (on the left hand side), the woods is about 20 yards away. When they came around a slight curve, they saw animal eyeshine and what looked like a deer walking up a steep hill. But then they realized that there are no steep hills in that particular stretch of land. When they got closer, they realized that it was a creature standing on its hind legs. They told me that it was shaggy and had tan fur. I believe that there is a dogman. I've never seen one myself, but I've heard stories from many people that I know don't believe in supernatural nonsense and they aren't liars. My father also claims that he saw him back in the early 80's. I only know a few details, but I know that he was driving down the freeway late at night when something rammed into the side of his car. When he looked in the review mirror, a big, hairy something, stood up on it's hind legs and ran away like a man. The only thing I wonder is could this possibly be a bear? How far can a bear run on it's hind legs? There's black bear in this region, I've never heard of a "tan bear".

Amber,

Last I heard the Great Dogman Festival was going to take place in Frankfort, MI. There were lots of sightings of him near there in the 90's. I'll make sure to post more information as I hear about it.

I've never heard the full story. Where can I find it?

Dr. Fong said...

The most entertaining version of the stories I have heard are in the song "The Legend" also known as the Dogman Song. This gives a fun and spooky, if not totally accurate version.

As for specifics of the stories. This seems to have become a meeting place for people interested in the history of the Dogman. I'm sure if you had a question someone here would be able to answer you.

We just recently moved to Michgan a year ago and I absolutly love this song. I can't wait to order a copy to send to my husband who is serving in the nave. I told him about the song but when he came home in July it was not the time to play it on the radio. I would love to go to the festival please do post more as it becomes available.

I recently found out about Dogman. I live in Michigan also which makes this odd tale even more creepier. My parents own property near Gaylord and I've heard stories of Bigfoot around that area. I truly do believe in Bigfoot and in the Dogman. Why shouldn't I? There is no proof that they don't exist and numerous people have had encounters with the Dogman. What I don't understand is why people think that the Dogman could possibly be a bear. People describe him at tall and lanky with long arms and bears are fat with short arms. I've never seen a bear run on two legs for a long period of time and if they could, why would they? It wouldn't be to their advantage. In one encounter I read about a young man reported that the creature chased after him and he was doing 40 miles an hour before the creature slowed down. Bears can only run 25-30 miles an hours. It's very odd that the creature usually makes an appearence on July 7 of every year. What is so special about the number 7 and does the year 2007 have any special meaning for the creature or what might happen?

I'm very interested in the Dogman and Bigfoot because when I was about 8 or 9 years old I had something very odd happen to me. I always liked to sleep with my blinds open because I liked to look at the stars while I was laying in bed until I fell asleep. I woke up one night to go to the bathroom and as I was walking back to bed, something in my window caught my eye. There was two yellow eyes staring at me. My window is about 4 feet off the ground and this creatures eyes were well above the part of the window lock. I stood there at stared at the eyes for about 5 seconds and then they were gone. I slept in my parents room until I was 12 with my brother's BB gun. I guess I'm so fascinated by these tales of these creatures because I want to find an answer to what I seen. I've only read of the Dogman knocking on peoples windows and then they die because he's so ugly...could it have been him?

How utterly fascinating would it be to physically track such a creature were it to be real. Although whether real or imagined such an undertaking would still represent some level of risk.

Should anyone be able to provide more insight into this phenomena including perhaps additional photographic evidence I would be most interested.

Though I would much prefer that such be provided safely and at no risk to anyone involved including the creature in question so that it may continue to be further scrutinized.

And Dr. Fong, you are to be highly commended for having produced such a phenomenal site!
You may consider my eclectic knowing at your service should ever it be needed.

I have been hearing about the Dog Faced Man since I was a little girl. My Great Grandmother used to tell about seeing him one night in Kalkaska (Sigma actually) sometime in the 50's or 60's. She and my Great Grandfather were on the Angling Road (not sure if that is the real name of the road but it's what I've always known it as) between Sigma Road and Sunset Trail and she swears he was standing on the bank of the river by the bridge. My Great Grandmother was an Ojibway Indian and she never told a story that she did not beleive whole heartedly. I never heard anything about July 7 being significant to sightings, only that he appears in the 7th year of every decade. Maybe July 7th has been incorporated into the tale because of the numbers in the date (07-07-07). Anyway, the tale scared the bejesus out of me as a kid and it still makes me nervous to this day because Grandma LaMay said she saw him with her own eyes. There were many more scary tales that my grandparents told about that area that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

I grew up in Rapid City right near the Alden line. We lived on Manley Rd right off of Plum Valley. When I was 8 years old in 1987 I saw the Dogman. I'm not the only one who saw it either. My older brother and one of his friends saw it at the exact same time. The three of us were riding bikes through the woods one morning and we decided to leave our bikes and walk through a field that was seperated by a barbed wire fence. The grass and the weeds were way over the tops of our heads. We made our way to the middle of the field and as we parted the grass in front of us there were 2 yellowish eyes staring back at us. We were scared beyond all measure so we hightailed it out of there back the way we came. When my dad got home later that day he went back out there with us to get our bikes(which we left). We got to the spot of the fence were we left our bikes and the whole fence was torn out of the ground, post and all. We looked closer and we found some nice sized claw marks in dirt around there spaced widely apart. To this day it still gives me the creeps to drive by that field, which I do quite often. I wholeheartedly believe in the Dogman, am I scared of it? No I'm not. If it had attacked us I probably would be scared crapless. However, I wouldn't want to come face to face with it again.

Ummmmm...so mister anonymous your telling me that god knows how many people are liars when I doubt they all lied and to prove that they exist why don't you go over to the surrounding woods of Reed city where many of the encounters have occurred and stay there for one night, yelling at the top of your longs, and act like you want to fight them. I've herd there's more than one and it makes sense if you think of all the sittings. I bet you wouldn't last 2 hours HA!!!!!!.

Wisconsin Dog Man

My girl friend and I went out to feed deer for the hunting opener on Nov. 22, 2008. We where in the Chequamegon National Forest in northern Wisconsin. It was November 21, 2008 and the time was 12:10 AM, it was totally dark out and light snow was falling with an accumulation of about 1 inch covering the roads. The Temperature was 11*F and the wind was blowing from the north west with a wind chill of 0*F. We made a U turn to the left onto an unfinished ATV trail in one of our 4X4 Pickup's heading towards last years feed pile. I got to the bottom of the hill and backed in and parked. I got out my pistol and loaded it, I then put it in my holster, I grabbed my headlight with 3 LED bulbs and secured it on my head, I handed her a shaker LED flashlight and proceeded to the back of my truck where I had a 5 gallon bucket with just under 2 gallons of corn and 3 apples in it strapped down with 2 of my ATV straps. I put the tail gate down, unstrapped the bucket and put the tail gate up. I walked around my side and then in front of the truck to her passenger side as she was putting mittens on. We both started to walk together, her just behind and to my right side when we both noticed a fresh set of tracks in the snow heading down wind of us in the same direction we where walking. At first it was not the size that caught my attention, it was "WHAT IN GOD"S CREATION MADE THESE TRACKS" immediately my skinned crawled as I looked around with my head to see if what we just had come up on was in sight. I glanced back down in disbelief at the tracks. I was in a slight stage of shock as I looked at her she looked at me and we both looked down at 4 well formed foot prints of some kind of scary tracks that either of us had ever seen before. I sized my shoe beside one of the tracks and realized it was about 3 inches longer than my shoe which measures 12 inches heel to toe, and about 1 inch wider than my shoe which measures 4 inches at it's widest width. What ever we witnessed the foot prints of has 2 pointed talons on the end of it's foot that are isometrically the same with a rectangle shaped heel. The talons joined on the outside and at the same length in between the talons on each foot. They are 15 inches long and 5 inches wide with 64 inch strides. I have a 36 inch stride at 5'10" tall to give an idea of the possible size of this creature, running or not we do not know. I believe we just missed seeing what caused these tracks and what ever made the tracks was still in the area and possibly watching us. My girl told me to load my pistol and keep it out, I did not argue. At first she wanted to leave right away but the sheer adrenaline and interest of what caused the tracks I believe is what kept us there. I said "okay let's get out of here" but again, interest kept us there looking at the tracks. My fear slightly subsided enough to think about the upcoming deer opener and decided I have the pistol and we will be okay. I started to walk the same way the tracks went up a hill on the trail when I stopped and looked back at her while she was still staring down at the prints. I said "come on lets get this over with" she caught up to me as we walked together, she said to me, "if this thing get's a hold of me put a bullet in my head" I thought about that as we kept walking. We went deep into the woods down a steep hill where I new the feed pile was from last year. We got to where I wanted the pile to be, I took the lid off the bucket and dumped the corn and apples out and stepped on the apples, I snapped the lid back on the bucket and said "let's go" We started to climb the hill when I realized we where off track and had to walk left to reach the trail to get back to the truck. I started to think that this was the scariest thing I have ever encountered and felt panic over coming me. I new where I was and finally we got back on the trail and walked down to where we could see the tracks of the creature again. We both stared at them for about 5 minutes. When we got back to the truck just 20 yards from the prints, she got in and closed her door. I went behind the truck, opened the tail gate and re strapped the bucket down and closed the tail gate. I got to my side of the truck and took the clip out of my gun and got in. I threw my head light off my head as we drove away thinking and then I said, "I am not coming back here" and she agreed. We where both scared and could not believe what just happened.
It was a month earlier and 1.1 miles walking through the woods from where we witnessed the tracks that a different friend and I where camping. I went to bed early and fell into a deep sleep. I woke up to the sound of my friend walking behind the tent and my first reply was "what are you doing back there?" I woke up a little more and realized my friend was sleeping, breathing kind of loud next to me. I sat up against my gear and grabbed my pistol and flash light and sat there cold and scared in the dark. I woke my friend up and told him what I could hear and he said "ah it was probably a deer or something" The temperature was around 26*F. I looked out the flaps of the tent and could see the fire had died down and it was dark out there. I stood up and told my friend that I was going to the truck to warm up and get some sleep. I asked him if he wanted me to leave the pistol and he said "no I'll be alright". I left the tent and walked to my truck about 80 yards away and started it up to get warm. I turned my lights on a few different times to see if what had walked by the tent was in sight. I did not see anything, I turned my truck off and fell asleep. What ever walked by the tent was bi pedal and made 2 steps into my sound range and out again. I did not hear any other noise from what ever walked by. I looked around the next morning for foot prints but leaves covered the ground and I did not detect anything. A little more than 2 years earlier. It was summer and I was at this same location riding my ATV alone, I stopped and got off walking down to a near by lake and was looking at the water and how clear it is when I could hear up on the hill above the camp ground we had stayed at a huge tree snap and hit the ground with a big thump as branches snapped off it and other trees as it fell. I got back to my ATV quickly at the time thinking a bear or buck was up there and I was not sticking around to find out. 2 months later that summer I returned to this spot again riding my ATV, I shut off the wheeler and stood around close by thinking about the last time I was there I was scared off by something. I was there about 5 minutes when all of a sudden I could hear branches snapping off of trees as what ever was breaking branches was coming down the hill closer to where I was. I got on my wheeler never to return until my friend and I camped there a little over 2 years later in October. My first 2 experiences with this creature while I was alone made me think it was possibly a bear or a buck deer, trouble with this theory is that I have come up on bear a dozen or so times and every time, the bear is running as fast as it can in another direction and what ever was making the tree sounds was not running any where. A deer also runs away at the first presence of a human. Now that we witnessed these creatures foot prints I put the puzzle pieces together and realize that this creature is living in this area and it has probably been there for a long, long, long time. I have learned it means us no harm (yet). It only makes a sound when I am alone (tree breaking). It is always down wind of me(us). It is out in the day and or night. It can see in the dark. It uses the wind to it's advantage every chance it get's. It can hear good. It can smell good. It waits until we are vulnerable to approach us when 2 of us are together. I possibly have smelled it and did not know that is what I was smelling. I(we) have put 4,000 miles in this forest on my Grizzly ATV through deep desolate, thick wooded, swamp, lake areas and have now proved to ourselves that this undocumented at this time creature is in fact out there. I believe this to be what the Monsterquest American Werewolf series TV show on the History Channel has shown to be the half Man-half Wolf "DOGMAN?" that others have actually witnessed. I know where this creature is living and plan on an expedition to prove it's existence. I want to document this creature because I feel everyone that enters the forest has a right to know it is there and for other various reasons. I am open to any and all that would like to comment or ask questions in discussing my encounters with this creature(s).
Signed, yours truly, Sure And Scared.
I have an actual picture that I took which I discovered after writing this story that proves it to be the Wolf Man Creature(s) the Monsterquest American Werewolf Episode Debuts.
I do not care who believes me about the proof I have of this creature(s) existence. I know where at least one of these creature lives. I will bring it to light very soon.

theres one thing i dont get. why are most of the sightings in the US and very few in Canada? I live in a little town called Ladner, its in the Southwest corner of British Columbia, about 40 minutes away from the Washington State border. Ive heard of a sighting in Ontario, and the one closest to where I live was in Hope. Ladner has a big marsh and there is a bog in the area. I would like to have some advice on werewolf hunting. should I put trail cams and bait in parts of the marsh and bog? Thanks! Yours Truely, Kenny Phillips

OK so this is no joke. Im from frankfort MI. My mother worked at a retirement home called The Mapels. its on maple street between crystal avenue and michigan avenue. Anyway when I was 14 I walked up there to see her on her lunch break. I was walking the back way up hospital hill and it was around 11:30 pm. It was not the seventh year of the decade but it was july. Im still not shure what I saw but at the time I assured myself it was a bear but now I realize bears do NOT run on there hind legs. I never would have saw it because i wasnt paying any attention to what was on the other side of the road. I had walked this road thousands of times and the only thing that ever came out of the woods there where deer, but when i got within 20 yards or so i saw a big dark animal of some sort stand on its hind legs and look at me.It was to dark to make out so i froze in fear. just as I was about to run it turned and ran back into the woods on its hind legs. still not shure what it was but i swear on my life I saw something that night.
