Strange Weather - Ball Lightning

Dr. Fong Says:
Very interesting and rare weather caught on video!

Though the young man in the video seems to think these balls of light are some sort of alien craft, they look like what is called ball lightning to me. He is right to be scared, though as it is very dangerous.

He and his friends should be much more careful as ball lightning is very mischievous and likes to zoom into open windows and doors. Once inside your house ball lightning will head for your most expensive piece of furniture and promptly set it on fire.

These guys are very lucky to have witnessed this as ball lightning is very rare and mysterious.

Fascinating video! Even though I have seen ball lightning up close and personal, I cannot tell for sure whether this is a form of the phenomenon or not. Since the witnesses are quite a distance from the storm, I'm assuming those lights are very large in size. It's no wonder they may have felt it was some sort of 'alien craft'.

I believe you are correct in your statement that ball lightning is very 'mischievous' (I observed one basketball sized specimen dodging trees and heading straight for my neighbor!), though I am not sure if it is always dangerous.

I thought that I had heard a story once about someone's cow being hit by ball lightning and catching on fire before dying.

Has anyone ever heard this tale?

Hope I haven't submitted this comment ten times. I couldn't sign on for some reason using blogger/other settings.

I have met a guy from the kawarthas (N.E. of Toronto in Ontario), who said he used to see these things quite frequently during summer thunderstorms.

Also, what is the music playing? Sounds like Cash covering Dylan. Very cool.

The song is "When the man comes around" by Johnny Cash.

Yea, ball lightning is very dangerous. I've seen it enter a home, rape everyone in the home, then move along. Very Scary, indeed.

Hmmm...I had no idea I was in such danger...:-)

Doctor Fong, I've never heard of the cow on fire story. It would be interesting to know if that was a true story. Most of the stories I've heard involve strange effects very different from classic lightning. Has anyone heard any other stories?

This reminds me of the old Arthur C Clarke show that devoted a few minutes to ball lightning stories. One elderly lady batted an intruding (and mischievous) ball with a fly-swatter. It immediately fell to the floor, trembled, then exploded with a bang. I bet that shook up afternoon tea.

Cool site, Dr. Fong.

When I was in the 3rd grade one summer afternoon during a thunderstorm, my mother, brother, sister, and I were sitting on the couch in the living room. At the time we were living in Collins MS on a farm. Suddenly there was a strange sound and this glowing ball appeared in the kitchen and started floating toward us. There was a crackling sound and what looked like lightening coming from the electric wall outlets to the glowing ball. As it came across the room we started climbing on top of mom. When it got about 4 or 5ft from the couch it just like evaporated. When my dad got home he dismissed it as to BS to this day thinks we imagined it. I am 51 now and that was something I will never forget.

There's a problem with the ball lightning theory. Considering how far away they are, it's unlikely that the light is "the size of a basketball". Also, as a previous poster stated, the balls of light (there were at least two) lasted much longer than several seconds. The first lasted about a minute.

I experienced a form of ball
lightning back when I was about 14

thrown football with my knees, but
I misjudged the heigth and I swear
I saw lightning.
